Mini-Grant for Faculty Travel to Continental Africa Fall 2016

The African & African Diaspora Studies Program (AADS) has mini-travel grants for FIU faculty members to travel to Sub-Saharan Africa for their research needs and/or to improve quality of Sub-Saharan Africa-focused undergraduate course contents. These mini-travel grants are made available thanks to a U.S. Department of Education Title VI-UISFL grant entitled “Expanding and Developing African Studies at FIU.” Mini-travel grant applications must be received at africana@fiu.edu by midnight on November 15, 2016. Preference will be given to proposals/applications that will produce a direct positive outcome on any of the courses included in the AADS Certificate in African Studies curriculum, through faculty research development and/or through the gathering of data that will improve the quality of undergraduate course contents. The amount of the awards will depend upon the number of successful applications: we intend to at least cover the airfare of each successful application. We ask that a complete budget of the trip be submitted with the application so that in the case we have the funds available, we can cover other expenses in addition to the airfare. Awards will be announced by November 30, 2016.

Travelers must end their trips and be back in Miami by September 15, 2017 at the very latest. They must complete their trip’s expense report in the week following September 15, 2017. (We must close the grant’s activities and prepare the final report for the USDOE by early October, 2017).

The application should include:
•A cover letter explaining research objectives, the direct benefit(s) the trip will bring to AADS’s Undergraduate Certificate in African Studies courses. The mention of specific undergraduate courses (with prefix, number, and title) that will benefit from this trip must be made.
•The applicant’s curriculum vitae.
•The entire trip’s budget clearly separating items such as airfare, ground transportation, lodging, and per diem. Provide clear explanations for eventual out-of-the-ordinary expenses.
•Indicate other possible or already awarded sources of funding to support this trip.
