Teachers' Institute in Grenada

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The program is designed to study language, literacy, culture and instructional practices in a former British colony with a 96% literacy rate. A primary goal is to develop instructional practices that lead to academic success among children of color. The program provides students with an opportunity to examine the impact of culture on education and dev elopment for children and adolescents in the African Diaspora with a specific focus on Grenadian culture.

LOCATION DESCRIPTION:
Grenada is part of the Windward Islands in the southern Caribbean. This island nation, situated 2,300 miles southeast of New York City, 450 miles south of Puerto Rico, and 90 miles north of Trinidad and Venezuela, is comprised of three islands: Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique. Beautiful mountains, magnificent beaches, rain forests, and a remarkable piece of the history of people in the African Diaspora and the struggle for freedom grace the Spice Island of Grenada.

HOUSING:
Institute students and faculty will be housed at St. George’s University, True Blue Campus. The beautiful, modern, high tech campus overlooks the Caribbean Sea and has a black sand beach. Residences are equipped with kitchens, air conditioning, and laundry facilities, and many have wireless connections.

COST:
The estimated program cost of $1,928 includes: airfare; accommodations; meals; ground transportation; traveler’s insurance; field trips; departure fee; books and materials. In addition, students will pay FIU tuition (based on residency) + fees.
