Ava Purkiss, Master of Arts student, received the Florida International University College of Arts and Sciences Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement in African and African Diaspora Studies. Ava has maintained an outstanding academic record over the course of her studies. Her research examines African American women's resistance strategies to the debilitating physical and psychological ramifications of paid and unpaid domestic work in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. She will graduate this summer and is applying to PhD programs in History.
The award was presented at the College of Arts and Sciences 2009 Awards Ceremony on April 26th. The awards recognized graduate and undergraduate students for academic excellence or outstanding service, and were given to students who graduated/ will graduate in the fall, spring or summer terms.
