I am from Morven, North Carolina. I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Africana and International Studies from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. After studying abroad in the Dominican Republic during undergraduate and spending one year teaching English in Honduras, I returned to UNC-Charlotte to receive a M.A in Latin American Studies with a focus on race, color and identity in the Dominican Republic and Brazil as well as early 20th century U.S/Central American relations. I just returned from Barranquilla, Colombia where I taught English at the Universidad del Norte. While at FIU, she hopes to continue her focus on race and identity in the African Diaspora, particularly in Colombia, and also explore inequalities in the education system in the rural southern U.S. My ultimate career goal is to receive hmy PhD in Global and Sociocultural Studies and teach at the university level, and also start a non-profit that would allow low-income kids to study abroad.
