The African-New World program at FIU establishes the Africana Outreach Program in order to increase awareness and knowledge of Africana experience, history, and culture by providing information, materials, and services to schools, libraries, museums, businesses, the media, and community groups in South Florida.

South Florida is home to a growing number of people of African descent and is a major business partner to African countries, and to countries in the Caribbean and Latin America with African-descent majorities or significant African-Diaspora presence.

The mission of the ANWS’s Outreach Program is to critically inform all sectors of the community about the history and cultural heritage of peoples of African descent globally as well as the challenges facing Africana populations in South Florida. Through workshops, symposia, lectures, classroom visits, and other consultative capacities, we seek to assist teachers, students, policy makers, and community members with a better understanding of Africana issues.

We use the expertise of our faculty and students, and partnership with the School Boards and other public agencies and the private sectors in South Florida, to develop programs of benefit to schools, businesses, and the community at large.
