In November 2014, Dr. Jean Muteba Rahier, the Director of AADS, was invited to serve as external member of an Academic Committee (Tribunal Académico) at the Universidad Andina Simón Bolivar (UASB) in Quito, Ecuador, that had for mission to select the first professor to occupy the only position—in any Ecuadorian university—entirely dedicated to African American Studies and Latin American Culture. Dr. Rahier's service took place within the framework of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between FIU and the UASB in 2014. Dr. Rahier has conducted extensive research with Afrodescendant populations in Ecuador since 1984. Dr. Santiago Arboleda ended up winning the selection unanimously.
