AADS Program Director, Dr. Jean Muteba Rahier, delivered one of the conferencias magistrales (keynote lectures) at the Primer Congreso Internacional de Profesionales en Turismo (First International Conference of Professionals in Tourism) in Guayaquil, Ecuador that was held from the 19th to the 21st of February. Dr. Rahier’s lecture, Roots/Heritage Tourism o Turismo de Patrimonio en Gambia y en Senegal, África Occidental: Un Acercamiento Comparativo de Iniciativas Pro-Poor o Para la Reducción de Pobreza, discussed roots/heritage tourism in West Africa (Senegal and The Gambia) with the objectives to 1) discuss various theorizing of the African diaspora and 2) to compare pro-poor or poverty reduction tourism initiatives in both locations (Juffureh and Albreda villages and Kunta Kinteh Island in The Gambia, and Gorée Island in Senegal).
