AADS Combined MA in AADS/Ph.D. in GSS student Abby Gondek was awarded a small grant from the Ruth Landes Memorial Research Fund, a program of The Reed Foundation, to conduct an archival study entitled “Investigating Ruth Landes’s Jewish gendered positionality” at the Smithsonian's National Anthropology Archives. Gabby's research is on Ruth Landes Papers in Washington D.C. and will take place in July and August 2014. The purpose of this archival study is to uncover the possible connections between Ruth Landes’s experiences as a white Jewish American heterosexual woman and her research concerns and outcomes with communities of Black African descent in Harlem (1929-1934), Fisk University (1937-1938), Bahia, Brazil (1938-9), Great Britain (1951-2), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (1966), and South Africa (1970-4). This project is part of Abby’s preliminary research that will lead to the writing of her dissertation research proposal during the academic year 2014-2015. Abby's general research direction will explore the histories of Jewish anthropologists who have done work with Black communities in Brazil.
