Ava Purkiss, FIU MA in AADS class of 2009, has been awarded a Carter G. Woodson Pre-doctoral Fellowship lease feel at the University of Virginia. Her dissertation titled, “’Mind, Soul, Body, and Race’: Black Women’s Purposeful Exercise, 1900-1939.” Explores the ways in which health, beauty, and recreation were important to black women’s engagement in the physical culture movement of the early twentieth century. Specifically, it argues that black women engaged in physical culture to literally and figuratively shape the black female body and create a new, fit vision of black womanhood.

Congratulations Ava!
