Congratulations to Laurel Burchfield, who is enrolled in a combined MA in AADS/PhD in International Relations. She is the student winner of this year’s Karell Travel Grant. The grant will allow her to intern during the summer 2011 and do research with the Conflict Early Warning and Response Mechanism (CEWARN), a program of Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. CEWARN has been identified by the African Union (AU) as a functioning and successful unit of civil violence early warning and conflict prevention within the Regional Economic Community (REC of IGAD). The AU partners with RECs in an effort to develop the Continental Early Warning Systems (CEWS).
