AADS offers the following Degree and Certificate Programs:
1. A one-year three-semester M.A. degree that can be taken either in an on-site or a fully online program. Courses in the on-site program are offered both online and in a face-to-face format.
2. Three combined M.A./Ph.D. Programs jointly with the departments of Global and Sociocultural Studies (Anthropology, Sociology, and Geography), History, and International Relations.
3. The three undergraduate certificates in African Studies, Global Black Studies, and Afro-Latin Studies.
4. Two Graduate Certificates in African & African Diaspora Studies and in Afro-Latin Studies.
AADS Degree Programs
The one-year one-year three-semester M.A. degree can be taken either in an on-site or a fully online program. Courses in the on-site program are offered both online and in a face-to-face format. The degree provides interdisciplinary, graduate-level training where students master theoretical knowledge, gain training in research methods, become proficient with multidisciplinary analytical frameworks, and gain exposure to the fundamental principles and in-depth knowledge of the field of African and African Diaspora Studies. Students develop and use theoretical, analytical, and methodological approaches that they can apply critically to diverse fields of engagement in which they choose to specialize. These include development and underdevelopment; technology; religious practices; environmental policies; health and wellness; history, culture, and society; race and ethnicity; gender and sexuality; language and linguistic training; and all aspects of aesthetic and creative expression, including film, literature and material culture. The degree prepares graduates for further study at the Ph.D. level as well as for professional positions in the public, private, non-profit, and international arenas and for employment in education, public policy, public administration, journalism international organizations; and other fields. The program provides students with a strong grounding in research methods.
AADS Certificate Programs
The three undergraduate and two graduate certificates are designed to complement students’ work in their major fields of study as well as to provide training and credentials in African and African Diaspora Studies. Courses are offered in “face-to-face” classroom format and online. Certificates are offered to FIU students concurrently enrolled in other programs Courses can be taken either on-site or on-line. Each certificate offers students the flexibility to choose courses that allow them to focus more specifically and gain specialized knowledge in the area of its particular focus.
