"Through Our Eyes"
Photographer and AADS graduate student Noelle Theard partnered with Power U Center for Social Change for "Through Our Eyes," an art exhibit featuring the work of 17 young photographers from Overtown. The exhibit was the outcome of a workshop in which Theard had previously trained students in techniques of photography. On opening night, March 14, 2009 over a hundred people came to support the show, which included a series of 30x30 inch photos that reflected the community and its relationship to the School-to-Prison pipeline. The photographers are all members of Power U Youth, a sub-division of Power U Center that is demanding the implementation of a Restorative Justice program in schools. This program seeks to correct errant behavior by addressing root causes and, as such, is viewed as a viable alternative to the current Zero Tolerance policy that has resulted in the incarceration of so many youth.
