2007 African-American Luncheon

On Thursday, February 8th, the African New World Studies Program (ANWS) hosted the Third Annual African-American Luncheon, with over 80 people, including students, faculty and staff. Keynote Speaker, Dr Marvin Dunn delivered a lecture on African-American heritage and contributions in South Florida. Also in attendance were Mayor Kevin Burns of North Miami and the BBC Vice Provost, Dr. Damian Fernandez.

The event featured an exciting performance by Master Drummer Abdoulaye Diallo, accompanied by Dialu dancers, who had everyone in attendance tapping their feet and clapping their hands to African beats. A scrumptious menu of healthy soul food was served buffet style, culminating in a brief awards ceremony honoring those who have made significant contributions to ANWS and the black community.

Four former and current faculty/administrators received Outstanding Africana Award for their significant contribution to Africana Studies & Multicultural Programming at Florida International University and the community. The recipients were: Dr. Marvin Dunn, Retired Professor of Psychology and former Director of African-New World Studies; Dr. Raul Moncarz, former Vice Provost of BBC and Emeritus Professor of Business; Dr. Rosa Jones, Vice President of Student Affairs and Undergraduate Education; Dr. Joyce Peterson, College of Arts & Sciences Associate Dean, BBC. Mr. Babacar M’Bow, International Exhibits Coordinator at Broward County Library was awarded the Africana Excellence Service Award. The awards were presented by Vice Provost Damian Fernandez and Dr. Akin Ogundiran, ANWS Director.
